Dairy-free and Vegan Ice Cream

Dairy-free and vegan ice cream exists! What a time to be alive! Here are the best of the best brands to look out for:

When I found out Booja Booja made huge range of vegan ice cream alternatives, it was as if 8 years of dairy-free prayers had all been answered at once. Their products taste so rich and delicious, made from only the finest ingredients.

It’s quite pricey, but for me Booja Booja are the most outstanding brand for quality flavour and texture, and it tastes truly indulgent. They produce 4 flavours based on vanilla, ginger, maple & pecan, and chocolate.

You’ll find more information in my review of Booja Booja Hunky Punky Chocolate.

Swedish Glace is the market leader in vegan ice cream, and I actually prefer its soy-based offering to conventional ice cream. It comes in two flavours, Vanilla and Raspberry (Chocolate and Blueberry were discontinued; I almost wept). You’ll find Swedish Glace lighter in texture than dairy ice cream, though no less indulgent.

Vanilla Swedish Glace has a deliciously balanced flavour, without the dense, fatty heaviness of dairy ice cream. It’s therefore perfect for use in other recipes such as the amazing Ice Cream Sandwich below, from Cookies and Scream bakery in Camden Market, London.

As of January 2015, Swedish Glace is now a Wall’s brand. Time will tell what that will bring…

Since Swedish Glace, other vegan ice cream brands like DREAM have taken a firm grip of the market, with a ton of flavours made with almond milk and rice milk. They’ve got me through many a movie marathon. Check them out!

Flavours include:

  • Chocolate
  • Praline crunch
  • Cappucino Swirl
  • Mint Chocolate Chip
  • Toffee Almond Fudge

The first time I tasted Jollyum was at The Allergy & Free From show at Kensington Olympia in July 2015, and it was pretty good. It comes in four flavours:

  • Summer Strawberry
  • Maple & Pecan
  • Double Chocolate
  • Passion Fruit & Chocolate

I sampled the Passion Fruit & Chocolate flavour. The combination was great, and the taste wasn’t overpowering. I did find it a little more icy like a sorbet than Swedish Glace, which was something of a compromise.

Sweet Rebellion seem an oddball in the ice cream market. Owned by Taywell Ice Creams, Sweet Rebellion produce “lactose-free, gluten-free, calorie-reduced, processed sugar-free, vegetarian ice creams”. They say “this is a world first as there is no dairy ice cream containing only natural ingredients on the market which ticks these boxes so neatly, yet delivers such a fabulous taste of authentic ice cream.” Their main range is not to be mistaken for dairy-free ice cream; this ice cream is only lactose free. They do however have one flavour which is entirely dairy-free: Sweet Rebellion Raspberries & Cream Dairy Free. These guys could do great things if they can define a clear marketing message and get themselves known.

Nana Nice Cream are a brand new venture, building on the increasing demand for dairy-free and vegan ice cream. There are three flavours:

  • Banana vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • Strawberry

Each pot is just 120ml, but with only apple, banana, sunflower oil, avocado and dates as the main ingredients, they are filling, and a convenient portion size to tuck into between meals. I tried Banana Vanilla and was pleasantly surprised by the smooth texture and subtle banana flavour that came through. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on these guys and hope to try their other flavours soon.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not make your own vegan ice cream? Certain recipes will require an ice cream maker, but those such as the vegan banana ice cream recipe below require little more than a blender and a freezer.

If anyone has any vegan ice cream recipe recommendations, let me know! I’d love to make some new varieties.
