Montezuma’s Chocolate – The Story

“We started Montezuma’s, our little chocolate business, in 2000 with… a broad ideal to bring chocolate innovation to a boring and staid British chocolate market.”

I love this quote from founders Helen and Simon. It highlights exactly what I remember when browsing store shelves for chocolate back in 2000. Everything was the same back then… They’ve come a long way since setting up and are now available in a wide variety of UK supermarkets including Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

I also love that they’ve managed to deliver on this mission statement while maintaining a Trading Fairly Policy that ensures an ethical approach to sourcing, supplier management, packaging, and waste disposal.

Look for the trademark Montezuma’s Star when picking your chocolate!

Montezuma’s Dairy Free Chocolate

There is such an awesome variety to Montezuma’s dairy free chocolate selection!! While they also make regular chocolate with dairy ingredients, there are heaps of flavours in the Montezuma’s dairy free chocolate bars range, including:

Flavoured Dairy Free Chocolate Bars

Plain Dark Chocolate Bars

Montezuma’s Vegan Chocolate

Montezuma’s Chocolate do sell non-vegan products, however they are incredibly vegan-friendly, with a dedicated Montezuma’s Chocolate Vegan Gifts section on their website. This includes several types of dark chocolate bars, giant chocolate buttons and vegan drinking chocolate:

In addition, there is also an impressive range of Montezuma’s Organic Vegan Truffles:

My personal favourite is the cute Montezuma’s Dark Chocolate Bar Library*:

*There are many Montezuma’s Collections but I couldn’t find a pic of the vegan selection. Please let me know if you have one!

Montezuma’s Dark Chocolate Absolute Black – 100% Cocoa

This one deserves a special mention. With less than 0.5 grams of sugar per 100 grams, Montezuma’s Absolute Black bar is suitable for diabetic chocolate lovers as well as those avoiding sugar, such as those on a ketogenic diet.

It’s bitter if you’re not used to 100% cocoa chocolate, but the taste is actually much smoother than other 100% dark chocolate bars I’ve tasted, despite being a sugar free chocolate bar.

Montezuma’s Great British Pudding Bars

This was a genius invention. They fused some of the most famous Great British puddings with the deliciousness of Montezuma’s high quality chocolate. This made an awesome range; Montezuma’s Great British Pudding Bars!

The Black Forest Gateau Bar is the only one that’s dairy free and vegan, but that’s forgivable considering the tasty range of vegan truffles I’ve already mentioned. Go get your hands on the Black Forest bar and give it a try!

If you like it, these tasty bars in their novel Union Jack packaging make a great gift for any chocolate lover. There’s even a Union Hamper available if you wish to splash out and gift someone the whole range of six bars.

Montezuma’s Chocolate – The Taste Test

Montezuma’s brand is built around making sure chocolate is never dull – as if that could happen…

What I love about Montezuma’s dairy free and vegan chocolate bar range is the wide variety of flavours, which is unusual for a brand that also makes regular non-vegan chocolate. The flavours range from sweet (see the Great British Pudding Bars above) to the bitter (Montezuma’s Absolute Black) and everything in between. This makes Montezuma’s chocolate perfect for snacking, but also for cooking. That 100% would make a mean chocolate torte!

My personal favourite thing is that dairy free and vegan chocolate lovers are not only limited to dark chocolate bars but can also enjoy vegan truffles in four different flavours. Not only that, but the truffles are expertly crafted in a way that doesn’t feel like you’re being cheated out of anything. They’re rich, smooth and flavoursome, exactly as one would hope. So there’s no way you’ll notice that they’re dairy free.

Montezuma’s is also rich enough in taste to be seen as a luxury treat, and presented beautifully enough to be given as a gift or make a funky centrepiece while serving up dessert at dinner parties. So it’s great for all occasions!

Montezuma’s Chocolate Stores

As well as being able to buy Montezuma’s chocolate online, there are stores. If you’re in the south west of England, chances are you’re near enough to a Montezuma’s Chocolate store. At the time of writing Montezuma’s chocolate stores are:

  • Brighton
  • Spitalfields London
  • Winchester
  • Chichester
  • Kingston & Café
  • Woking

I popped in to the Spitalfields store one lunch time and it was one of the best smelling places I’ve ever been. So it’s worth going, even if just for that!! But I can promise it’ll be tough to leave empty handed.
