IJsboutique, Amsterdam

What luck to stumble across this gem! IJsboutique is hidden away in the side streets of upmarket Amsterdam. Between Vondelpark and Museumplein (known for the Van Gogh museum; Rijksmuseum…), you’ll find IJsboutique in a quiet residential area, on Cornelis Schuytplein.

On first glance it looks like any ordinarily gelato store, and I was doubtful of dairy free options.

“Does the sorbet contain milk?”, I asked. “No, all of the sorbet is dairy free!” Perfect! Such helpful customer service. While they didn’t have dairy free ice cream, we were very happy with the vegan sorbet options of chocolate, raspberry or lemon.

What we ordered

My mother and I eat went straight for the puur chokolade sorbet (dark chocolate), and I got a scoop of zingy raspberry sorbet on top. It’s insanely delicious. The ice crystals are so tiny that the treacly and indulgent dark chocolate sorbet soon melts in your mouth, covering your taste buds with rich and earthy cocoa deliciousness. On top of that, there are tiny dark chocolate pieces throughout. It adds a nice bite and an intensely indulgent double chocolate vibe.

Raspberry sorbet at IJsboutique is just how my grandmother used to make it – fresh and zingy. The raspberries taste as though they were only picked that day. Again the sorbet is very high quality, with tiny ice crystals showing how carefully and lovingly it has been made.

The scoops are small at IJsboutique – you won’t get your ice cream or sorbet piled high like in more mainstream ice cream parlours. But that doesn’t matter, because it’s rich enough that you’ll be more than satisfied.

You can take your dairy free sorbet away in a tub or a pot. We both chose pots, so I can’t vouch for whether the cones are dairy free. They looked like your standard vegan cone though!

Oh, and for the non-vegans, the ice cream has been described as the “best ice cream in Amsterdam” on TripAdvisor!

IJsboutique’s ice cream and sorbet has gone down so well that it’s even available at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sky Lounge in Amsterdam. If that’s not enough to tempt you, I don’t know what is.

The ice cream flavours include a sophisticated salted caramel, sumptuous strawberry cheesecake, and zingy lemon meringue pie.
